Highlights for the Week!
One of the goals for the staff at Washington Oak is Social Emotional Learning. In education, we need to ensure that the demands of a student's character are developed just as much as their academics. Social Emotional Learning helps students learn to manage their emotions, build empathy towards others and make proper decisions. These practices are built on a culture of safe and positive learning.
One of the ways we are enhancing this learning at Washington Oak, is through a social emotional block in the school day. In grade one, Mrs. Pires' students are engaging in a morning meeting, to set the climate and culture for the day. The morning meeting has four components:
1. Greeting - The students greet each other by name, establishing a friendly tone for the day.
2. Sharing - Each student shares an interest or topic, based on a teacher chosen prompt,
3. Group Activity - This gets students involved in an activity together like singing, reading a poem, or participating in an active game.
4. Message - The teacher writes a message for the day, to encourage and kick off the learning!
Check out the pictures from the grade one morning meeting below!
Full day Kindergarten is off to a great start! I have been so impressed going into all of the classrooms seeing students reading individually and with partners. I have enjoyed participating in lessons in math and writing. I wanted to share some excerpts of the Kindergarten writing because I was so impressed with how our students are doing in October! The pictures below are from Mrs. Tyree's classroom where students started with a whole class story about picture day and then they worked to develop individual stories. Kudos for their hard work!!
