I hope all the Washington Oak families had a great Thanksgiving holiday! It was very refreshing to have a long weekend to spend with friends and family.
In this post, I wanted to share all the fun Thanksgiving activities that were happening at Washington Oak this past week. Students learned all about why we celebrate Thanksgiving.
In Mrs. Kiernan's Class, the students did a jigsaw research project comparing the pilgrims and Wampanoags with an assigned topic, then created a video with pictures of their topics behind them.
Below are photos of the grade 5 "Thankful Turkey" project. Students brought home turkey feathers to decorate with their families. The theme was being thankful.
Grade 2 Thanksgiving Dioramas
Grade 2 students discussed what they are thankful for last week!
We have received questions on RTI and how it runs at Washington Oak. Below I will outline what RTI is, how it works at the school and how to get more information. If you have any follow up questions or need more information, please reach out and let me know.
What is RTI?
Response to intervention (RTI) is a process used by educators to help students who are struggling with a skill or lesson; every teacher will use interventions with any student to help them succeed in the classroom—it's not just for children with special needs or a learning disability.
Three Tiers of Academic and Behavior Support
Tier 1- Universal Level for all learners
CORE instruction by classroom teacher to all students. Administrators and teachers embrace the goal of improving student achievement. This includes small group instruction on targeted and differentiated skills.
Tier 2- Targeted Level
Students not making adequate academic or behavioral growth, with universal supports in place who have mild or moderate difficulty, will receive targeted specific supports for struggling skills.
Tier 3- Intensive Level
Within this tier, students receive the most intense and consistent interventions by specialists.
All students at Washington Oak are screened three times per year in math and reading. The teachers and I review this data and determine the level of support students will need. Students that fall into a significantly below average range in math and/or reading will then be placed within an intervention group with a highly qualified teacher.
The intervention for students is determined by analyzing student data and using research based programs/strategies. The team then determines how the intervention will be progress monitored to ensure it is effective.
The RTI team reviews data on students in the RTI process every 6-8 weeks to determine if the intervention should continue, be changed or if the student can continue in the CORE Tier 1 instruction.
Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions are always in addition to CORE instruction by the classroom teacher.
