Ice Cream Social
Thank you to all the families that joined us for the Ice Cream Social! It was very well attended and everyone enjoyed some delicious ice cream and time to reunite with friends. A HUGE thank you to the PTA for working so hard to put on this exciting event for our families. Thank you to all the teachers who came to help scoop and visit with students and families.I tried to stop at every table to say hello to parents and students. If I didn't say HI, please reach out to me the next time you see me at school or at our next event. I look forward to meeting every family member at Washington Oak. Back to School Updates!
Just a couple updates before school starts on Monday.
1. If your child is going to be a walker/pick up at the end of the school day, please provide a note for at least the first week of school. There will be a permanent walker notice going home on the first day of school. This will be kept on file at the school and with your child's classroom teacher.
2. Please return all of the forms that go home on the first day of school as soon as possible. (especially the small emergency card)
3. Please direct all Food Service questions and concerns to: Glen Motta, Food Service Manager- 401.821.1242- Motta-Glen@aramark.com
4. First grade and K students - please don't forget to wear your badge/sticker during the first couple weeks of school. This helps when students are getting off the bus in the morning! *Don't forget to put bus/walker information on the tag.
5. Busses might be running a little late on the first week of school as they adjust to the schedule. Don't be alarmed if they are not picking up or dropping off at the exact time in the bus route schedule.
6. If you are picking up your child at the end of the school day, you will need your ID with you each day!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. It has been an exciting summer for me as the new principal of Washington Oak. I have had the chance to meet many parents, staff, students and community members. It is clear to see the dedication and passion within our school community and I am honored to serve as the leader of Washington Oak Elementary School.
I strive every day to help each child be successful both inside and out of the classroom. I will continue that mission at Washington Oak. When it comes to the education of your child, I firmly believe that parents and staff need to act as a united team. I ask you to please join me in this endeavour, primarily by maintaining a strong level of communication, in order to maximize your student’s potential. I will be posting blog updates on happenings within the school at least once a month. These blogs will be posted on the Washington Oak website and also shared in our ListServ. A brief career history about me: I began my educational career 12 years ago as a classroom teacher and reading specialist, starting in Connecticut and eventually leading to Rhode Island. I spent the last three years as the assistant principal in Warren at Hugh Cole Elementary School. I look forward to continuing my educational career here in Coventry.
On the first day of school, you will receive some important paperwork that will need to be reviewed and returned to school. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email. Classroom lists will be posted on the doors of the school building on Friday the 26th at 3pm. Please stop by the school to view your child’s assignment for the 2016-2017 school year. Our goal in this process has been to ensure balanced, heterogeneous class groupings that support the classroom teaching and learning environment.

Ice Cream Social
I would like to invite you to the Ice Cream Social on August 26th at 6pm. This is the first PTA event of the year. I look forward to meeting the students, parents and community members at this beginning of the year event (and also scooping ice cream for everyone)!
New Family Orientation
The new family orientation for new students entering grades 1-5 is on August 24th, at 10am. This orientation will give a short tour of the school, answer any questions and provide a brief overview of our PTA. I hope our new Washington Oak families can join us on the 24th.
